Problem

A new sports park in a multicultural neighborhood needed fencing that was safe and durable, but also meaningful to the community it served. The usual chain-link or plain bars would be purely functional and do nothing to foster community pride. The challenge: design an enclosure that is strong and inclusive, reflecting the diverse identities of the local population in its appearance.

Solution

Redfort embarked on a participatory design process. We engaged with community members from dozens of cultural backgrounds to discover motifs and symbols important to them – from traditional textiles, art, or symbols. These findings informed the creation of an intricate Lalace pattern composed of many smaller motifs, each representing one of the cultures. The resulting fence design is like a patchwork quilt of the community’s heritage. It meets all requirements for height and security for a sports facility while acting as an outdoor art installation that residents can identify with.

Product

The completed enclosure includes metal fence panels and gates laser-cut or woven with the community-inspired pattern. As people walk by, they can spot familiar shapes – perhaps a motif from a homeland or culture – integrated seamlessly into the design. The sports park fence now serves as a conversation starter and point of pride. It’s galvanized and powder-coated for longevity, ensuring that its story remains for generations. This Redfort product demonstrates how thoughtful design can turn a simple fence into a unifying symbol for a community.
