Problem

Hackney House was meant to be a temporary pavilion highlighting the local borough during the Olympics. The site was tight, and the structure needed to stand out amid the urban clutter. The challenge was to design a lightweight facade that could be assembled and disassembled easily, provide branding for Hackney, and draw visitors in. Additionally, it had to allow daylight and ventilation for the pop-up events inside.

Solution

Redfort employed a Lalace metal lattice in bright red to wrap the pop-up building. The design took the form of a cube outlined in red “lace” – essentially a steel frame with decorative mesh panels. This wire-frame look gave the pop-up an edgy, industrial-art vibe perfectly suited to Shoreditch’s creative scene. The lace pattern was abstract but dynamic, ensuring the facade looked interesting from all angles. It functioned like a giant billboard, displaying the cool, modern identity of Hackney to passersby and clearly demarcating the space’s boundaries without using solid walls.

Product

The product delivered was a modular Lalace facade system, including panels and structural supports that could be bolted together on-site. Finished in the borough’s signature red, it became the pavilion’s iconic skin. The semi-transparent mesh allowed onlookers to see the buzz of activity inside and kept the interior naturally ventilated (important in summer). After the events, the system was dismantled. Hackney House’s bold lace facade succeeded in making a big impact with minimal structure – an excellent demonstration of Redfort’s ability to create temporary architectural installations that are memorable and effective.
